Dogs Thrown From Car on New York Highway Saved by Trucker

beagles found after thrown from vehicle

New York Police say a pair of beagle mixed dogs are on the mend after someone threw them out of a moving vehicle on a New York Highway last week. The pups were rescued by a passing trucker who happened to witness the incident.

According to New York State police, the suspects were spotted driving down Interstate 81 near Whitney Point (located about 16 miles north of Binghamton on Wednesday when the incident occurred.

"These animals have been through a lot, and people need to understand that this is not OK," said Amberly Ondria, shelter manager for the Broome County Humane Society. "This is not something that should be done."

The truck driver told troopers he saw what looked like an older Dodge Durango slow down, roll down their rear passenger window, and then someone threw the two dogs out the window. The trucker described the vehicle as "very dirty" and had rust along the hatch near the bumper area.

Investigators are hoping that someone on the highway last Wednesday may have captured some of the incident on a dash cam, but so far, police say they have no leads.

The dogs were later named Trooper, for the state troopers who helped bring them in, and Adam, after the truck driver who initially rescued the pups. Trooper appears to be between 6 and 8 years old, while Adam is much younger, at about a year old, police said.

Trooper suffered a compound fracture on his front right leg, that had to be amputated, the humane society said. He also had a hairline fracture of the ulna on the left front leg, as well as broken ribs, and contusions to his lungs and shoulder. Because of his injuries, Trooper will require a harness of some sort to stabilize him.

New York State police are hoping that anyone who might have spotted the vehicle traveling south on I-81 between the Marathon and Whitney Point exit at approximately 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, should call SP Homer at (607)749-1614.
