Short story... Amazon is building a Wi-Fi network using your Wi-Fi connection.
WXXI News says, "It's called Amazon Sidewalk, and the company touts it as a way to help it's devices work better, by extending the range of low-bandwidth devices to help them stay online."
It supposedly pools your neighbors' Wi-Fi to help connect others' devices that are out of range. Scared yet?
Amazon Sidewalk will be compatible with Amazon Echo devices early June 2021. Ring Doorbell Pro devices will be able to access Amazon Sidewalk, too.
Why is Amazon adding devices to these shared networks automatically, rather than getting permission from device owners?
The company says it's all in the customer's interest.
You can follow the steps here to opt out of Sidewalk for your Echo device, and the steps here for your Ring device.
