Nancy Wilson Debuts New Solo Single 'You And Me,' Celebrating Her Mother

Heart's Nancy Wilson debuted the title track from her forthcoming solo album, You and Me, for International Women's Day on Monday (March 8).

Nancy and her sister Ann Wilson have long been symbols of female empowerment in the music business, and the new track, Nancy says, is a celebration of one of the greatest women she ever met: her mother.

"This song is a song for women," she tells iHeartRadio. "It's like a conversation in zero gravity with my mom, like when you've had a dream of your mom and she's no longer of the Earth but you've felt like you got to hang out with her? That's what this song is about."

Growing up, the Wilson sisters' home was devoid of traditional gender roles. Their father's military career meant he was away for most of the year and so the girls were raised in earnest by their mother. It wasn't always easy, but the circumstances cultivated Ann and Nancy's strong personalities and musical confidence.

"...[W]hen we got a real rock band going and we started writing our own songs and playing shows, tours in vans and then being on bigger stages, it was just second nature," Nancy continued. "Our mom, I would give her the credit for that. She was a steel magnolia of a woman — forceful and strong and nurturing and soft all at once. She said, 'Follow your bliss. ...Whatever makes you the most fulfilled, just follow that bliss.' That's what we did and we weren't afraid of it."

"You and Me" is Nancy's second solo single for her album, due out May 7.

The first single, released last October, was a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising."

Nancy has fielded questions about a potential solo album for years. She told Q104.3 New York's QN'A in the fall that with all the time she spent at home last year, she didn't have much choice but to write and arrange new music.
