Sarah Ferguson Defends Meghan Markle Amid Royal Family Drama

It's been a tumultuous year for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had many highs in 2019, such as welcoming their son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor back in May, they've also experienced some pretty low lows. Though there's been rumors of a fallout between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, defended Meghan amid all the backlash in a new interview.

โ€œIt must be hard for Meghan, and I can relate to her,โ€ Ferguson told Vogue Arabia. โ€œI believe she is modern and fabulous. She was famous before. She is great. Why canโ€™t Meghan be great? Why canโ€™t she be celebrated?โ€

Like Meghan, Ferguson married into the royal family when she wed Prince Andrew back in 1986. Though they've since divorced, Ferguson remains in the spotlight thanks to her close proximity to the royals. As for whether Ferguson has any advice for her fellow Duchess, she says she tends "not to give advice because it is taken out of context, but I have been in Meghanโ€™s shoes, and I still am. Thereโ€™s always a twist of negativity and it just gets so sad and tiring; itโ€™s hard and mean. I abhor bullying and I feel desperately sorry for the pain they must be going through because Iโ€™ve been through it.โ€

Ferguson also opened up about how her own children, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, have also suffered as a result of constant scrutiny and the pressures of royal life. โ€œThey say that unless they are perfect, itโ€™s front page news, and thatโ€™s hard,โ€ the Duchess of York concluded.
