She just celebrated her 138th birthday on Saturday (yes, 138th!) and she’ll be around to see 158 — the Jersey Shore’s iconic Lucy the Elephant will now remain in place for another 20 years.
The 65-foot high attraction was in danger for a bit of time, with worries that she might need a new home. The Margate Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the 20-year lease to keep her in her Margate home, overlooking the Decatur Avenue Beach. The deal with then renew automatically every 5 years, securing Lucy’s place at the Jersey Shore for many more years to come.
This past Saturday, they held a birthday party for Lucy, that included an annual fundraiser. It was probably even more fun, celebrating another 20 years to come! And let’s be honest — this is all for the best, as not only does Lucy get to stay, but could you imagine trying to move that thing?!
