Christina Aguilera Celebrates 'Genie In A Bottle' 20 Years Later

Red Carpet For The Grand Opening Of "Christina Aguilera: The Xperience" Residency

Christina Aguilera reflected on her hit song "Genie in a Bottle" turning 20 this weekend.

Saturday (June 22) marked the 20th anniversary of the track that would make Xtina a fixture as a pop superstar — and the powerhouse soaked up the moment with an emotional message on social media. "Hi lovies! Today marks 20 years since #GenieInABottle was released… got me feeling all types of emotional!" the 38-year-old wrote on Instagram with a screenshot of her self-titled debut album, on which the summer anthem served as the LP's leader.

"At just 18 years old, I remember coming home from Japan and seeing that it had reached #1 on the Billboard charts and feeling so grateful and happy that you guys loved it as much as I did," Aguilera reminisced. "Thank you thank you thank you for riding with me all these years. My fighters, I love you! 💋💋💋 #xxtina."

While Aguilera's 1998 recording of "Reflection" for Disney's animated motion picture Mulan was officially her first solo project, "Genie in a Bottle" became an instant breakout upon its release on June 22, 1999. The single became the second highest-selling record of 1999 (it sold seven million copies globally), topped record charts in 21 countries, and became a platinum success in the United States.

If you can believe it, the songbird "wasn't too crazy" about the demo at first. According to Pier Dominguez’s 2003 unauthorized Christina Aguilera biography, A Star Is Made, the musician didn't believe "Genie" did justice to her "sick-nasty" pipes — but was ultimately "proud" of how it turned out.
