If you've ever wanted to go into space or land on the moon, NASA is opening up a window for you to apply to become an astronaut.
NASA opened up their website to applications on March 2 and will keep the submission period open until March 31st at 11:59pm EDT.
Last time the agency had an open hiring process, NASA only picked 12 out of more than 18,000 applicants during the last selection back in 2017.
Out of the 12, only 11 graduated and became eligible for spaceflight...just this year. Yup, it took them about 3 year before getting to the point of being a full-fledged astronaut for the space agency.
There are requirements, however. According to NASA, applicants should hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) field. Yes, you need to have some brains for the job.
But, some applicants would be considered without the master's degree, as long as they have the following:
- Two years of work toward a STEM Ph.D. program.
- A completed doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine degree.
- Completion of a nationally or internationally recognized test pilot school program. If test pilot school is your only advanced degree, NASA requires a bachelor's degree in a STEM field as well.
